OgStar Reading
provides students in grades pre-K through 8 with an enjoyable and comprehensive 106-lesson literacy game, based on the well-respected Orton-Gillingham approach. My role was to develop their supplementary picture dictionary that is aimed at early readers, students with dyslexia, and English language learners.

Identify the Challenges

Design the Mockups of the Picture Dictionary
I developed the wireframing screens, shared a solution for integrating the picture dictionary with a quiz game, and refined the design iteration process.

Design Mockups
The prior design mockups were flashcards for the picture dictionary and nothing more. To improve the learning experience for students, I added these. The added feature was a quiz game.

OgStar Reading Supplement Design Mockups
In the high-fidelity mockups, I made the OgStar Reading Supplement that included the flashcard picture dictionary and the quiz game.
I noticed there was an issue with having a smooth transition from the picture dictionary to the quiz game. I solved this by adding another screen frame, which the user can proceed directly to the quiz instead of starting from the menu page.

Design Mockups
In regard to the visual illustrations, I used open-source images and carefully chose the best quality ones that were age appropriate for young learners. I also adapted the cultural sensitivity for a wide range of diverse ethnic groups.

High Fidelity Design Mockups
Spacing and typography were part of the design thinking. I also added touchscreen buttons to move between different screen frames.
High Fidelity Prototyping
The high-fidelity prototype design has demonstrated that this picture dictionary could be used as an interactive app for learning new words with audio. I believed the implementation of the quiz feature had also enhanced the student’s learning experience and I could share that innovative idea with my product manager.

Takeaway of What I Learned
In this valuable internship experience, I could assist and encourage struggling readers by developing a supplement picture dictionary with a quiz game. I could co-team with my product manager and was grateful for her feedback while I produced quality UI/UX designs.
The OgStar Reading picture dictionary has allowed me to think of better user flow designs, such as other iterations in adding the quiz game. The iterations helped improve students’ engagement.
